  58. This version is primarily intended for users of Microsoft(R) Windows(R)
  59. 3.1/3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.1/3.11 who are connected to a 
  60. local area network (LAN) or who have existing Internet connections (people 
  61. who have an existing TCP/IP connection, a dialer, and an account with an
  62. Internet service provider).
  63.  
  64. Note that this version is a 16-bit program and therefore you do not need
  65. to have Win32s(R) installed on your computer.
  66.  
  67. If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT(R), you can download 
  68. a version designed and optimized for these platforms at:

  71. This product enables you to browse and view HTML documents on the network, 
  72. in addition to documents on the World Wide Web or Internet,
  73. provided your network is connected to the Internet or provided you
  74. have an existing TCP/IP connection. Other services, 
  75. such as Gopher and FTP and NNTP news support, are also available.

  88. System Requirements
  89. -------------------

  91. - A personal computer, 386 processor or higher
  92. - Microsoft Windows 3.1 or 3.11 or 
  93.   Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or 3.11
  94. - At least 4 megabytes (MB) of memory
  95. - A VGA monitor or better
  96. - A mouse
  97. - A modem with a speed of at least 9600 or a LAN 
  98.   connection
  99. - TCP/IP Stack & Dialer

  101. Important 
  102. * A TCP/IP network protocol stack and a dialer (often
  103.   referred to as Winsock.dll) are required to access the Internet
  104.   through an Internet service provider (ISP). As mentioned above, this 
  105.   version of Internet Explorer requires that these components be 
  106.   installed before running Internet Explorer.
  107.  
  108. If you are accessing the Internet through a LAN or just browsing your
  109. internal network (intranet), your network administrator can provide you
  110. with the appropriate version of Winsock.dll.

  114. INSTALLING MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER

  117. Installing from the Internet
  118. ----------------------------
  119.  
  120. To install Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, carry out 
  121. the following procedure.
  122.  
  123. 1. Create a temporary directory on your computer.
  124. 2. Choose to download Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, 
  125.    and save the file Dlmin30x.exe to the temporary directory.
  126. 3. In File Manager, run Dlmin30x.exe to extract the program files.
  127. 4. Read the instructions below for LAN installations and for installing
  128.    with existing TCP/IP connections.
  129. 5. In File Manager, run Setup.exe. Setup installs files in the 
  130.    directory you specify.
  131.  
  132.    NOTE
  133.    If you are upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer and
  134.    choose to install the program in a different directory from your
  135.    original version, please refer to the following section, "Upgrading 
  136.    over Versions 2.01 and 2.1", for further instructions.
  137.  
  138. 6. If you want, you can delete the temporary directory you created.
  139. 7. Run Internet Explorer.
  140.  
  141.  
  142. Upgrading over Versions 2.01 and 2.1
  143. When upgrading to a newer version Internet Explorer, you can choose to
  144. install the program into the same directory as your previous version 
  145. or establish another directory. If you choose the latter, your previous 
  146. dialer settings and connection(s) will be preserved. However, if you choose
  147. the former, you must do the following in order to use your pre-existing dialer 
  148. settings and connection(s):
  149.  
  150.   1. If you install to a new directory, but keep your existing 
  151.   program group, you must change the properties of any dialer 
  152.   program item(s) you previously created so that the 
  153.   Command Line and Working Directory settings point to the appropriate
  154.   directories. (Note that the New Connections program item does not 
  155.   need to be modified.) You do this by clicking the dialer program item,
  156.   choosing Properties from the File menu, and replacing all references 
  157.   to the existing directory with the name of new directory. For example, 
  158.   if you install an upgrade of Internet Explorer to a new directory named
  159.   NEWEXPL, the following change would be required:
  160.  
  161.     Command Line: C:\IEXPLORE\iedial.exe C:\IEXPLORE\CON0000.CON
  162.     Working Directory: C:\IEXPLORE
  163.  
  164.     Changes to:
  165.  
  166.     Command Line: C:\NEWEXPL\iedial.exe C:\NEWEXPL\CON0000.CON
  167.     Working Directory: C:\NEWEXPL
  168.  
  169.   2. Using File Manager, copy all files with the extension .CON
  170.   from the previous directory to the new created directory.
  171.  
  172.   3. If during the upgrade you choose to use a new program group,
  173.   just follow Step 2 and copy the old dialer program items to the new 
  174.   program group. Repeat Step 1 to change the Command Line and Working
  175.   Directory settings.

  178. Upgrading over Versions 1.5 and 1.6 Beta
  179. If you are upgrading from the version 1.5 or version 1.6 beta, please 
  180. read the following special notes.
  181.  
  182. - The format of Iexplore.ini has changed, so Setup will make a backup
  183.   copy of your current Iexplore.ini file to a file called Ie16ini.sav.
  184. - You will need to reapply any user-selectable settings, such as proxy 
  185.   servers, in the new version.               
  186. - Your Favorites and History lists will be preserved.
  187. - Win32s is not required for this version, so if you installed Win32s 
  188.   specifically to run the version 1.6 beta, then you can remove it from
  189.   your system. Please refer to the following URL for instructions on 
  190.   removing Win32s from your system:

  194. LAN Installations
  195. -----------------

  197. After completing the steps outlined above, you should be ready to use 
  198. Microsoft Internet Explorer over your LAN. You will be able to use 
  199. Internet Explorer to browse the Internet. (If you are not sure whether 
  200. you currently have access, consult your network administrator.)
  201.  
  202. If you have access, your LAN administrator should provide you with 
  203. proxy servers that also can be used.
  204.  
  205. To install Internet Explorer, you need to do the following:
  206.  
  207. - Make sure you have the TCP/IP protocol installed.
  208.  
  209. Proxy servers can also be used, provided they are CERN compliant.
  210. To enable use of a proxy server, choose Options from the View menu,
  211. and then on the Proxy tab, type the data needed for your proxy server.

  214. Using Third-Party Telnet Helper Applications
  215. ----------------------------------------------
  216.  
  217. To configure Internet Explorer to use a Telnet helper application,
  218. open IEXPLORE.INI and locate the [Helpers] section. Remove the 
  219. semicolon from in front of the telnet= line, and type the path to 
  220. the telnet application. For example:
  221.  
  222. [helpers]
  223. telnet=c:\windows\telnet.exe %s
  224.  
  225.  
  226. Installation with Existing TCP/IP Connections and ISP Accounts
  227. --------------------------------------------------------------
  228.  
  229. In general, all that is required is that you configure the PATH command 
  230. in your Autoexec.bat file so that Microsoft Internet Explorer can find 
  231. the Winsock.dll file you are using to connect to the Internet. For 
  232. example, if your Winsock.dll file is in the directory C:\Connect, add
  233. a line directly under your current PATH command that reads:
  234.   PATH=%PATH%;C:\CONNECT
  235.  
  236. If you have multiple Winsock.dll files, please make sure that the Winsock
  237. file you choose to use comes first in the PATH command or is located
  238. in the directory where your browser files reside.
  239.  
  240. Following are procedures for installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 
  241. over some common Internet access products. Other packages available 
  242. include FTP Software, Network TeleSystems, and shareware from Trumpet 
  243. Software (http://www.trumpet.com.au/wsk/winsock.htm).

  246.    Internet Chameleon 4.5
  247.    ----------------------
  248.  
  249. 1. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer to the suggested default 
  250.    directory (C:\Iexplore).
  251. 2. Make sure that the Internet Chameleon directory is in your path. 
  252.    If it is not, add it to the PATH statement in your Autoexec.bat 
  253.    file, and then restart your computer.
  254. 3. Run the Internet Chameleon dialer program (from the Custom icon).
  255. 4. Select the line corresponding to your current Internet service 
  256.    provider, and make sure that the Dial On Demand command on the 
  257.    Setup menu has a check mark by it. This makes the dialer 
  258.    program run when Internet Explorer tries to connect to the Internet.
  259. 5. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon 
  260.    in the Microsoft Internet Explorer group in Program Manager.
  261.  
  262. If you have configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, an 
  263. Internet connection is made when you first enter an Internet 
  264. address in Internet Explorer.
  265.  
  266. If you have not configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, 
  267. you need to start that program before you start Internet Explorer.

  270.    Netscape Navigator 1.2 Personal Edition
  271.    ---------------------------------------

  273. 1. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer to the directory that contains 
  274.    your Netscape Navigator files. For example, if you installed the 
  275.    Netscape browser in the default directory (C:\Netscape), place the 
  276.    Internet Explorer files in the same location.
  277. 2. Run Internet Explorer.
  278.  
  279.  
  280.    Other Internet Dialer Packages
  281.    ------------------------------
  282.  
  283. 1. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer to the suggested default directory.
  284. 2. Make sure that the Internet dialer directory is in your path. 
  285.    If it is not, add it to the PATH statement in your Autoexec.bat 
  286.    file, and then restart your computer.
  287. 3. Run your existing Internet dialer program.
  288. 4. Choose to enable dial on demand (if your dialer supports this option). 
  289.    This makes the dialer program run when Internet Explorer tries 
  290.    to connect to the Internet.
  291. 5. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon 
  292.    in the Microsoft Internet Explorer group in Program Manager.

  294. If you have configured the dialer to dial on demand, an Internet
  295. connection is made when you first enter an Internet address in
  296. Internet Explorer.
  297.  
  298. If you have not configured the dialer to dial on demand, you need to start 
  299. that program before you start Internet Explorer.

  301.  
  302. Making a Backup Copy of the Software
  303. ------------------------------------
  304.  
  305. 1. Make sure that you have one disk (3.5" disks with 1.44 MB capacity).
  306. 2  After you have downloaded the software and have run Dlmin30x.exe (see 
  307.    "Installing from the Internet" section earlier in this file) your 
  308.    temporary directory contains all the files that you need to make disks.
  309. 3. Copy all the files (except Dlmin30x.exe) on your disk.
  310.  
  311. ---------------------
  312. KNOWN ISSUES AND BUGS
  313. ---------------------
  314.  
  315. * No inline video.
  316. * No Internet shortcuts.
  317. * Does not work with Windows NT Challenge Response Authentication in
  318.   Microsoft Internet Information Server. To work around this, make sure
  319.   the Allow Anonymous option is enabled in the WWW Service Properties dialog 
  320.   box in Internet Information Server.
  321. * You cannot open another instance of Internet Explorer by double-clicking
  322.   an .htm file in File Manager or double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon
  323.   in Program Manager. To open a new instance of Internet Explorer, choose
  324.   New Window from the File menu.
  325. * If you have voice messages waiting on your phone line (rapid beeps), our 
  326.   Dialer fails to dial out on the line. This can be remedied (for Hayes-
  327.   compatible modems only) if, in the file Modems2.ini, at the end of the line
  328.   for the InitString setting, you set "blind dialing" by typing:
  329.     S6=5
  330. * Internet Explorer might have difficulty loading a very large number of
  331.   newsgroups (>16000). If your news server has a large number of newsgroups,
  332.   you should use a dedicated newsreader to browse the groups.
  333. * After upgrading to version 3.0, if you run an earlier version, you may get
  334.   an error dialog stating 'Could not :Load Entry Point in Security Protocol
  335.   Module: Proxy_Basic=Proxy_basic_Load,basic.dll'.  This is a harmless warning.
  336.   Click OK and continue or copy the 'Basic.dll' from the 3.0 instalation over
  337.   the 'Basic.dll' of the previous installation.
  338. * You may experience problems running some Plug-ins.  We are working with
  339.   several vendors to resolve these issues.
